My DS is 8 but English is not his first language so his reading level in Eng is 7-8 I suppose. We've read some Roald Dahl and some other random books which I've found dreadful (eg Spy Dog, Beast Quest) and really can't pretend to enjoy. At the moment he reads a page and I read a page.

Would appreciate other recommendations for his level. Something I'd enjoy as well please?

You might like the Michael Morpugo range of books. There is a boxset on bookpeople.co.uk for a really good price.

I was going to get them for my son and asked one of the other mums at school about them, she got them for her kid and said she loves them herself! She's going to pass them on, which is why I didn't buy them! (our boys are 8 also)

The problem is DS likes horrid henry too, but he's not passionate enough about reading them on his own, so I have to read with him and I've sat through horrid henry like a martyr (the stories are awful imo), just like I read the Rainbow Magic with my daughters and nearly expired from boredom.

Definitely How To Train Your Dragon - there's a "I wonder what happens next" vibe that keeps them reading. Also Charlie Small, Will Solvit, Jake Cake,
