Hope someone can help.
I got letter from HSE last week to say that dd 5 had been referred to optamalogy dept after her developmental check in school. So I decided to go ahead and book an eye test for her. Turns out she has very poor vision in one eye and needs glasses. So I go ahead with ordering her glasses. Optician also said she would be writing referal to HSE for her. I asked if this was a private or public referal. She said all cases for children her age were in public system. So I was wondering is this true? What are the waiting times? I am in North West. Could I go private route or just wait for HSE appointment?
If anyone has any experience I would love to hear from you.
Thanks in advance.

I went privately recently for my dd and the optician filled in a form which I sent to the HSE and then they sent it back and I can claim back 52euro.
I am not sure what the waiting times are like, but when my dd was checked in school the nurse rang me and advised me to go privately as she would be waiting quite a while and it was causing her problems. It would vary from area to area though.

I got the same letter for DD2 last year but when I checked the wait time was just over a year so we got her glasses privately and claimed the 52 euro back from the HSE. After 6 mths they decided she didn't need a patch so there's no need for me to go anywhere else now.

oloonsay I never realised you could get it back on health insurance, I just checked my policy and I can get back 150euro a year on glasses (not sure if this is per person or per family.
I just paid nearly 300euro for glasses for myself on top of getting dd1 new glasses (and she is out of the kids range so they were dear enough). Great to think I might get something back, thanks!
