Just wondering by the age of 10, would most lo's have had any or most of these.
Most of friends/family all seem to have most by the age of 10?
Worried that ds seems to have avoided most and that it is more dangerous as he gets older or is it the norm not to have had them. He had the swine flu but thats it.

My dd1 has had chicken pox only, my ds and dd2(thankfully she's only 7mths) haven't had anything on your list. I myself had everything there by age 10 and by far the worst was mumps... I have little recollection of the other illnesses but the pain of mumps still stays with me...it's an awful thing for a little one to get :(

Should you not be allowed to choose more than one option?

DS1 has only had the chicken pox, the rest of them havent had anything major yet!

Mine both had the MMR and both have had chickenpox and nothing else on that list (aged almost 5 and 8).

Is this going to turn in to a vaccine debate? :lookround:

I think it's the norm not to get diseases that we used to get as kids, due to vaccines etc.

I had measles as a kid and chickenpox (as a teenager - feckin' awful!).

Plus some kids are more prone to getting sick/catching things than others. Some kids have a weaker immune system, for whatever reason.

I would be worrying more if my kids were sick a lot than if they were never sick.

Best wishes,

IM x

When i was a kid , I had teh chicken pox and measels together! I also had the mumps. we all got it one after teh other (there were 4 of us) My big bro had the mumps as a teenager and i rem him in bed crying with the pain. The rest of us were in bed for one day and after that were up running around!
I had alot of things as a young one which thankfully kids don't normally get nowadays! I had scarlet fever, Measels, chicken pox, mumps, kidney infections, broke my arm age 5, very bady cut my leg when i was about 6 and have a 6inch scar down along my thigh!!!

My DS was born before chicken pox vaccine was the norm in US so he has had chicken pox (and shingles since - not nice). That is the only one. I wouldn't expect my children to get these diseases - that is why we vaccinated them (yes I know there is a slight risk even with vaccination but I'm an optimist).

By the way did anyone see the article - maybe the Irish Times but am not sure -- about the family who travelled with children who had measles (they didn't realise it was measles - sniffles and temperature only - although since they were unvaccinated and their older one had measles a week or so before I would have thought it might well have occured to them). They travelled on a plane to US - children diagnosed with measles while there so doctors contacted health authorities. When CDC or equivalent tracked down the other travellers on their plane a couple of infants, seated a few rows away from these children had already contracted measles. Shows just how infections these diseases can be.

My three have had chicken pox - DD1 and 2 were around 2 years old, and DS was 11 months. All contracted it in their creches. I would hope the MMR would protect them against the other diseases!

They're much younger than 10, but they have all had CP & the MMR. I assume measles & mumps are pretty rare these days?

I was thinking that too.

2 out of the 4 have had chicken pox.

Did not realise there was a vaccine for CP now, must enquire about that for the other two.

Thanks for the replies.
I wasn't aware there is now a vaccine for chicken pox? Is this new? I must enquire about it.
I had everything as a child except chicken pox and am glad ds hasn't had any and hopefully wont in the future.

DD1 had chicken pox at 18 months, DS hasn't had despite having major exposure at least twice and I think DD2 had a very, very mild dose earlier this year (as in just two spots with a major dose of crankiness and a runny nose).

None of the others, DD1 and DS have had the MMR, DD2 will get it next year.
