Hi all,

Just wanted to double check with you knowledgeable mms - do any of know of any way I can have a homebirth? I have had a previous section (and a v birth prior to that).

And on a slightly different note, if I can't have a homebirth what is my best option for a vbac? I could attend any of the dublin hospitals though went to HS the last 2 times. Is it best to fly under the radar with being public or shell out the money for private? Is there any way of getting into the community midwives for ante natal care, regular midwives do the births with them don't they? (I know domino are different)

thanks for your advice

Hi Twinkle - your best bet is to contact the Irish Homebirth association and they'll advise what you can do - or contact your local midwife and she will tell you whats possible - in my knowledge it is possible.

Good luck!

My understanding is that as things stand a midwife would be precluded from attending you (her insurance would be invalid) because you have a previous section. (Something dear to my heart as I had a homebirth having had a section and hospital vbac but understand I would no longer be allowed to do so).

My hospital vbac was in HSt. I found them hugely supportive from the consultant I saw (s-p) to the midwife doing the special vbac antenatal class right through to the midwives who were with me on the day. They did their damnedest to make sure I was given every opportunity to have a vbac and it worked. It is the hospital policy to do so (which may seem at odds with their policy of active management of labour).

I went s-p so was in the care of the midwives for the birth. Definitely worked for me. I'd been private on my section and was loathe to do so again. (Just my experience, not suggesting it is a hard and fast rule).

With a vaginal delivery behind you you should get good support I'd imagine. A lot may depend on the reason for your section.

If you've any specific questions you want to ask just drop me a pm.

Best of luck.

I have heard that going public is a better way to go under radar so to speak:) less chance of lots of interventions if you would like to try for vbac.

good luck! it's a pity about no hb:(

Wow, I'm delighted to hear she's opened a birthing centre.
I had a homebirth with Philomena, I can't speak highly enough of her.

I don't think it is anywhere near open. There was a thread on here about the plans very recently. At that stage it was about establishing the level of interest in such a centre.

As the legislation hasn't been finalised yet HBAC is still an option. Get in touch with PC. If HB isn't an option a Doula is a good option. The Coombe are Doula 'friendly' and you can attend the Midwives clinic if all is well.

Philomena's birthing centre hasn't opened yet, but if she gets approval it could open within the year!
